What causes Strep Throat?

Strep throat is an infection of the tonsils and throat caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. In children, 15%—40 % of sore throats are caused by streptococcus. Strep bacteria can also be found in the sinus, ears, nose, lungs, stomach, bladder, large intestine, and throat/tonsils.

How is Strep throat transmitted?

Strep is contagious and spreads from person to person by infected droplets, mainly through sneezing and coughing. The infection is most contagious during the first 24 – 48 hours.

Strep throat symptoms:

1. Sore throat that develops rapidly. Causes pain on swallowing.

2. Swollen and red tonsils, often with white streaks or patches.

3. Fever

4. Swollen lymph glands in the neck

5. Tiny dots on the roof of the mouth

Less common symptoms include:

• Stomach pains, nausea and vomiting, especially in children

• A red rash called scarlatina

• Headaches
